If you're planning to have your business on the web it may also be a good idea to check if the domain name is available, you can check on the link below.

You also have to register for your ABN (Australian business number) this can be done through the following website.
www.business.gov.au

Even though you may have registered your name, it still doesn't give it full protection from someone else that may Trademark the name in the future. If you want to run the business under your own name such as Eric Dyer Plumbing you don't need to register the business name. But this has its advantages and disadvantages. If you already have a good reputation and people know you in the community it can be an advantage. Though having the business in your name may cause problems in the future if you decide to sell the business.
